Steve Awalt In The Community

Boys’ Hope/Girls Hope of Baltimore

Boy’s Hope/Girls Hope of Baltimore provides a safe and stable home setting four young adults from difficult personal and residential circumstances. I have been a regular volunteer who has provided mentoring to young men in a variety of ways: assisting with college visits, driving instruction, and providing twice-monthly meals, conversation and camaraderie that young people need in order to succeed. Please take a moment to read about the good work Boys Hope/Girls Hope is providing in Baltimore.

Maryland Lawyers for the Arts
Maryland Lawyers for the Arts provides free legal representation for income. For over twenty years, I have had the opportunity to support the arts community in interesting ways: I have assisted non-profits obtain, and maintain their 501(c) tax status, and I have provided legal guidance to the boards of arts organizations.  I have represented performance artists to see if their work is permissible under existing zoning laws, written contracts for painters, sculptors and actors, represented actors in court on wage payment claims, and reviewed and prepared leases for startup galleries.  I have provided many hours of free legal assistance to artists in MLA’s regular arts clinics.

Attorney Grievance Commission of Maryland
The Attorney Grievance Commission of Maryland investigates and regulates the ethical conduct of lawyers.   I have served as a peer review panel member and peer review panel chair in excess of 15 years.  In this capacity, I have participated in dozens of cases at the initial step in the ethical review process.

Habitat For Humanity
The Chesapeake Habitat for Humanity rehabilitates Baltimore’s unused housing stock to provide homes for those willing to commit sweat equity, and pay for their homes through the use of supported financing.
